Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages: The file C:\WINDOWS\launchurl.exe is infected with the Trojan Horse virus.



My computer has been acting up lately ... and I've noticed that something is running, but because it just flashes on my taskbar, I never see what it is ... so I ran my norton, and I got the message: "The file C:\WINDOWS\launchurl.exe is infected with the Trojan Horse virus."  I tried to delete, but I couldn't, and so I've now quarantined.

Set Windows to show Hidden files and folders
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.



**(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders. This is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)**

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

ViewMgr.exe

Turn off System Restore WinXP WinME. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

Now delete these Folders or Files that are Highlighted: (You may need enable "Show all Files" and disable "Hide System Files" in Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View Tab) (You may have to boot to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some Files/Folders)

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\comp\hpuiprot.dll

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and Reboot.

In Xp, here are some locations of Temp files

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Turn on System Restore

Before opening your browser goto START>CONTROL PANEL>INTERNET OPTIONS and make sure your Homepage is correct,if not ,type the URL you would like in the HomePage box.


Now re-run HJT and post a new logfile back here.

OK, so I'm almost done, but have a few quick questions:

1.) I didn't delete line 015 in HJT because *.westlaw.com was actually put there by me - can I leave this in there?
2.) I am about the delete the folders/files that are highlighted; there is no "viewpoint manager" folder in the "viewpoint" folder - am I supposed to delete the entire "viewpoint" folder?
3.) Do you have any idea if deleting the file "hpuiprot.dll" will affect my printing (the HP folder is all their silly software)?

Yes .. DELETE the ENTIRE FOLDER

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe]<< DELETE EVERYTHING HIGHLIGHTED

Another small hitch ...

I'm trying to delete my temp files, but am having problems.

In the folder c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temporary internet files, there are 4 files that cannot be deleted, for some strange reason:

www.ebay.com/
features_kotor2vrev.jpg
collapse_icon.gif

I have tried booting up into safe mode, and this doesn't help.

I ran a new virus scan which turned up clean - but whatever it was that is running in the background of my computer seems like it is still there.  =(
