CMOS Checksum error and fail to startup:
Operating System Version:Win OS 98
Problem Application Name & Version:OS
Problem Hardware Make & Model:HP Brio
Error Messages:CMOS Checksum error

Friends machine very sick. HP screen comes up, then one beep and blank screen with flashing cursor. If you hit the set up button, the cursor moves down a few rows and across a bit, then you get the CMOS checksum error on next start up. Can't use any recovery software etc as cant get to the computer, doesnt recognise start up disk etc. Just a blank screen!! Machine about 2 yrs old. Have recommended he change his cmos battery as better than doing nothing.

A CMOS Checksum error is usually caused by a dead CMOS battery but you sould still be able to enter the CMOS setup. If you cannot, then ask your friend if he/she tried to flash to BIOS and perhaps used the wrong BIOS upgrade.
