After upgrading from Windows 98se to Windows XP Pro the hard drive light is continuously on?

Is this damaging my system?

Any suggestions welcome

Is the system working ok? If so, then is there a constant grinding sound with the light being on all the time? It is possible that the light is just staying on and the hard drive is working fine. But if there is a constant grinding sound (reading from the hard drive) then it could be possible that the hard drive is damaged.

No there is not noise like that from the hard drive just the red HD light on all the time.

It is possible that the hard drive led in connected to the motherboard is on backwards. You could try flipping the connection.
