PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

I believe TR/StartPage.qr.DLL is the adware name that is assosiated with this se.dll

I've had this thing for a couple weeks. you all seem to know the problem with it, seen many posts on this se.dll with many different solutions. I've Run: Spybot S & D, Ad-Aware SE, Norton Internet Security 2004. Attempted TrendMicro but IE crashes everytime the scan starts.

Thank your very much in advance for your help.
Also, if this gets fixed... I love you, and my first born shall be named after thee. :p

Start by disabling System Restore, which is something you can re-enable after the PC has been fixed.
Right click My Computer and select Properties.
Click the System Restore tab and in there disable it. Apply and OK out

Furthermore, make sure that Windows Explorer is set to show hidden files and folders. Click Tools/Folder Options -> View and check Show hidden files and folders and uncheck Hide protected operating system files

Now download the following programs:

ISTsvc remover
Stinger
CWShredder
Spybot Search & Destroy
Ad-Aware
VX2 Cleaner
About:Buster <-- you won't use this one until after we've made some amendments to your logfile.
Cleanup! <-- you won't use this one until after we've made some amendments to your logfile.

Run ISTsvc remover before doing anything else!!!

Now go to the following online AV scanners (using IE for ActiveX stuff):

Panda Activescan
Rav Antivirus
Trend Antivirus

Let all of them delete what they want. Write down what they fail in dealing with.

Now run Stinger. It's a standalone tool that's designed to carve out trojans and such.
Let it run and allow it to do it's thing.

Then run and update CWShredder. Click the Fixbutton and click OK when the prompt CWShredder will shutdown any open Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player windows. Click OK to continue appears.
Wait for it to finish and then click Next and Finish.

Now install, run, update and scan your system with Spybot S&D.
When it's done scanning, check all entries that are marked RED and click Fix Selected.

Then install Ad-Aware and update it right away. Then scan and let it fix whatever it reports.
Then shut down Ad-Aware.
Then install the VX2 Cleaner and let it install into the Ad-Aware program folder.
Start Ad-Aware again and click the AddOns button. Double click the VX2 Cleaner in there and click OK at the prompt.

I Ran everything. I couldn't run Panda Activescan & Trend Antivirus. Panda had a redirect that i could find no way of overcoming when the scan initiated. Trend would cause IE to shutdown all together when that scan initiated. I tried to run Norton AV 2004 (updated) in its stead.

CWShredder could not permanently erase CWS.HiddenDll

Delete these entries from the Hosts file and then save it:

127.0.0.1 www.sophos.com
127.0.0.1 sophos.com
127.0.0.1 www.mcafee.com
127.0.0.1 mcafee.com

127.0.0.1 secure.nai.com
127.0.0.1 nai.com
127.0.0.1 www.nai.com
127.0.0.1 us.mcafee.com
127.0.0.1 rads.mcafee.com
127.0.0.1 trendmicro.com
127.0.0.1 www.trendmicro.com

When you've saved the file, right click it and select Properties. In there find the check box that's marked Read Only and check it, Apply and OK out.
The URLs, that are in there now, are security sites and the hosts file has been blocking your access to them, thanks to the Trojan you had.

The logfile is clean though Grin

Now try scanning with both Trend and Panda online, I believe that it won't be a problem now Grin

The Cat came back, the very next day.
Oh the cat came back, didn't think it would but
the cat came back the very next day OK.

I preformed the Hosts file update. I was not able to perform the Trend scan (whenever scan begins IE crashes, Panda just had the redirect to those virus pop ups). I ran Panda then went to sleep. When i woke se.dll was back. I'll list my HJT and My Panda Log Results.

Make sure that System Restore stays disabled, which is something you can re-enable after the PC has been fixed.
Right click My Computer and select Properties.
Click the System Restore tab and in there disable it. Apply and OK out.

Furthermore, make sure that Windows Explorer is set to show hidden files and folders. Click Tools/Folder Options -> View and check Show hidden files and folders and uncheck Hide protected operating system files

Now go to the following online AV scanners:

Rav Antivirus
Trend Antivirus
Panda Activescan

Let all of them delete what they want. Write down what they fail in dealing with.

Then run and update CWShredder. Click the Fixbutton and click OK when the prompt CWShredder will shutdown any open Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player windows. Click OK to continue appears.
Wait for it to finish and then click Next and Finish.

Now run, update and scan your system with Spybot S&D.
When it's done scanning, check all entries that are marked RED and click Fix Selected.

Now onto Stinger. It's a standalone tool that's designed to carve out trojans and such. Let it run and allow it to do it's thing.

Now is a good time to disconnect completely from the internet and then print out this page (or copy the contents to Notepad) and shut down all browser windows

Next open up your Task Manager and try to end the following processes, if they are there, note that you may have to right click each entry and select End Process Tree

mdm.exe
fxssvc.exe
ctfmon.exe

Next let Hijack This fix the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6729FA55-59FD-44EE-AEF9-8437DCED1FF1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gfeb.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe

O18 - Filter: text/html - {DF3730E6-65E0-4124-A6D0-A8D3D38022E7} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gfeb.dll
O18 - Filter: text/plain - {DF3730E6-65E0-4124-A6D0-A8D3D38022E7} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gfeb.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: igfxcui - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\igfxsrvc.dll

When that's done, search for and delete the following files (red) and/or folders (blue).

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gfeb.dll

Now run About:Buster and follow the prompts to scan (choose Yes/OK for all). It will ask you if you want a second scan, choose Yes.

Next run CleanUp! and click on the CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folders and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and Reboot.

In Xp, here are some locations of Temp files

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Before opening your browser, go to START>CONTROL PANEL>INTERNET OPTIONS and make sure your Homepage is correct, if not, type the URL you would like in the HomePage box.

Then rerun HJT and post a new logfile along with the current contents of your Hosts file

Good luck Smiley
