What windows operating system would utilise more than 512 of ram?
I read somewhere that only Windows XP would do this and my friend says Windows 98 would? Please help me settle this with him as he has just added over 512 of ram on his 98 system.

Thanks

Hi,

Windows by itself will not take up 512mb of ram, not even WinXP!

I am running WinXP with about 6 apps running which is using 150mb of ram of my 256mb total ram.

The more memory the better because instead of using the swap file (virtual memory) it will use the system memory which is faster. Depending on what type of applications you're running you could use up all the memory but at 512mb of ram using word processors and reading email will not do it!

If you were running graphic intensive apps like games or graphic/video editing, you could max out your memory on any Windows version.
