Hello joel .. Smiley

Set Windows to show Hidden files and folders
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

**(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders. This is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)**

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

hey Cactus, thanks for getting me this far.Smiley hopefully we can finish this.  followed your instructions and was able to get rid of the red desktop with the link (the desktop has retured to it's "good to see you again" windows baby blue.  deleted those ***.exe files.  more were beginning to appear but it was getting obvious in regards to knowing what to look for.... all these files usually are three letters long followed by .exe.  their dates of creation were all the same.  anyhow, the smart security garbage is gone (found some html files that had to be deleted as well), but the desktop is still locked (frozen).... well i can still double click items to run programs such as my computer and IE.

1. i cannot right-click on desktop icons to access their individual sub-menus (new,cut,paste,rename...etc.)

2. in windows explorer, the same problem occurs in the right window (where all files and folders are listed).  the left window (directory trees) is fine. i can access the right-click menu in that window pane..... weird.

3. when trying to access the desktop settings thru start>control panel>display, the background section is locked.  cannot browse for image or select any of the windows basic desktop pics.

well here is the new Hijack This log:

Thanks again and it is much appreciated if you could get me thru the rest of this saga of computer hell.  oh yeah, noticed a lot of desktop.ini files peppered through-out the system in windows,system32, and near user temp internet folders.... is this cause for concern?

EG---- Open MyDocuments----Right click an empty spot and select NEW---Folder----Name the new folder HJT ---this is where you will want to save Hijackthis too, also, backups will be stored there.
Download from here
http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe

Run this newer version and post back HERE with the new logfile.

also, when i try to copy short cuts to the desktop (that's the only way i can add shortcuts to the desktop at this point), they appear in doubles (two of the same icon will show up).  just thought i'd post more info on the situation, if it helps.

Ok let's try this joel ... Lips Sealed

Set Windows to show Hidden files and folders
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

 Goto START>RUN
Type or Copy/Paste the line below into the Run Box:

regsvr32 /u draw32.dll <<< Press OK

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

SpySweeper.exe
NOTEPAD.EXE
wuauclt.exe

Turn off System Restore WinXP WinME. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - (no file)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - (no file)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: draw32 - draw32.dll (file missing)

Now delete these Folders or Files that are Highlighted: (You may need enable "Show all Files" and disable "Hide System Files" in Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View Tab) (You may have to boot to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some Files/Folders)

Goto START>SEARCH>ALL FILES AND FOLDERS
Click MORE ADVANCED OPTIONS
Put a tick in SEARCH HIDDEN FILES & FOLDERS
And a tick in SEARCH SUB FOLDERS

Now search this file:

draw32.dll  <<< DELETE EVERYTHING YOU FIND

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and Reboot.

In Xp, here are some locations of Temp files

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Turn on System Restore

Before opening your browser goto START>CONTROL PANEL>INTERNET OPTIONS and make sure your Homepage is correct,if not ,type the URL you would like in the HomePage box.

Now re-run HJT and post a new logfile back here.

Hi Cactus, when running the regsvr32 /u draw32.dll command, i got a RegSev32 Alert message:
LoadLibrary("draw32.dll") failed.  The specific module could not be found.
I continued with the process though.... noticed that wuaucit.exe would begin a new process after ending it (about 30 seconds would pass before beginning once again).  i think this file is a windows update reminder exe.  Also, a search for the draw32.dll file did not turn up any results. that file was not found even though safe mode.

my default browser is IE but i do have Netscape 7.2 installed for e-mail purposes.

rigt-click and desktop problems still occur.  here is my new log:

Ok the draw32.dll file not being there is a good thing .. Wink

wuaucit.exe  is Windows Updates...it just needs to be STOPPED while we do the fix .. we do not delete this file.

Goto to Windows Updates and download ALL the Critical Updates and Service Packs available.

Then re-run HJT and post another logfile.

Ok your logfile is clean joel .. Grin

Now for the Desktop issue...

Click Start|Run. Type 'Regedit' and press ENTER. The registry editor opens.

Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup.
On the 'Registry' menu, click 'Export Registry File'. In the 'Export range' panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup.

Navigate to these keys...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right-pane, double-click NoViewContextMenu and set it to 0 if exists.

Similarly check here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Post back and let me know the results.
