PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows XP

I am new to this, so forgive me if I miss something. Here's how the story goes. I went to a website earlier yesterday and AVG started going crazy detecting viruses. I was telling it to heal and/or delete, but it couldn't do it. It was freezing the system so bad I had to reboot.

When the system started I now have all kind of desktop icons, that when deleted just come back. I have an icon in the system tray of that looks like the Windows error icon, the red circle with white X in it. When clicked a browser page opens of the website antispy.newgenlook.info. I also get balloon pop-ups from this icon stating things such as "My computer has been infected by a stealth trojan and will not boot properly next startup, and Unkown Pop-ups detected.

My home page was changed to a newgenlook.info page, and I get various pop-ups and redirects. One real annoying thing is I will get a system message that states the following:

Error 317 - Microsoft Internet Security Warning
Windows is corrupted with spyware virus.
You must patch your pc urgently to protect your system
Private info is accessed by ports:
-8080
-3128
You can patch your pc for free now and delete all spyware viruses
Click ok to choose and download free spyware removal using AntiSpy

I always close or "cancel" this message and it always redirects me.

I have run Adaware, AVG, Norton, S&D, CWShredder and none have been able to help remedy the problem.

This is a nasty and annoying problem and I hoping someone can help. I may need to be walktrough some of this stuff as I have never encountered a situation like this.

Here is the HiJack This log
Thanks in Advance!

Thanks for helping. This nasty thing still seems to be on there. The pop-ups, redirects, and balloons haven't stopped. And it's still hanging around in the system tray.

I dont see any more malware in the log.If you have deleted those other files there should be no more problems.Run hjt and fix this item and the do the download.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.newgenlook.info/ad/ad0271/

Download SILENT RUNNERS  to a new folder,... Unzip if Zipped, and run the Silent Runners.vbs file.
Open the "Startup Programs.txt" file it creates, and copy/paste the contents to this post, please.
The "Startup Programs.txt" file will be in the folder you ran the "Silent Runners.vbs" file from.

I think I may have cleaned this nasty out. I had been tipped about the following files being the culprit:

param32.dll
guninst.exe
popup_bl.dll

All were located in the C:\Windows\system32\ folder. I also deleted the files that were modified at or about the same time as these were and everything seem to be working great.

I ran Adaware and Spybot and they found nothing. I wanted to post an update HJT log for you, incase there is something there I missed. I will also post an updated Silentrunners log.

Thanks for this fix, it worked for me as well.

I thought I'd add one thing - I could delete all of the offending files through Windows Explorer except one - param32.dll.  To get around this I shut down and restarted in Safe Mode (with Command Prompt), then deleted through the command line interface:

D:\>cd\winnt\system32
D:\WINNT\SYSTEM32>del param32.dll

Once I restarted everything was fine.
Thanks once again

OK, I've got the same problem (I posted about it but it's been roundly ignored! Tongue).

This fix sounds interesting - I'll try it later. Just want to confirm the following: I take it should I delete the offending files in SafeMode, with system restore off, using killbox. Is that right?

Thanks!
