When I go to the start up menu it show 4 options.  1. normal
          2. logged (\bootlog.txt)
          3. safe mode
          4. step-by step confirmation
When I go into safe mode it just goes into safe mode but still just background and no icons and no start menu.

I put my restore cd in and went to boot to dos prompt from cd-rom.  Then I typed c: to go to the c drive and typed cd windows and that went to windows and then typed win and pressed enter.  Then a screen came up and said that the system found an error in a registry and fixed the error and restarted.  Everything came back on my desktop.  I'm still not sure what caused it or if I had totally solved the problem.  But its back to normal.

I would appear you had registry corruption which were fixed by scanreg.

You should keep an eye on it to make sure you don't have a hardware problem causing these corruption.

Simpy run scanregw once in a while to see if further corruptions are happening.
Start > Run
Type 'scanregw' and hit OK (no quotes)

Thank you for letting us know how you resolved your problem! Smiley
