Hello and Welcome to MyTechSupport.ca

It is essential to keep your computer's operating system and programs in top condition.  That means keeping up with applying patches, hotfixes and service packs. Make sure that your Operating System and Internet Explorer are up-to-date by visiting the  Windows Update Site and downloading all of the Critical Updates and Service Packs.
Your system is NOT up-to-date. After we get the log cleaned out make sure you visit that site.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall.  Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

Download AboutBuster and unzip it to a folder on your the Desktop. Do not run it yet!

Download DelDomains.inf

To use: Close all open browsers
Right-click DelDomains.inf and select: Install

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there.  Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. You will use this later.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one (You must kill them one at a time).

C:\WINDOWS\netwf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\apiuv32.exe

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

Not sure if that did it- I have a feeling there is more to be done. It seems as if I have a bunch of infected files in WINDOWS and Windows32 (judging from the virus scans).  Here's the HJT log.  Thanks for the help so far!

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

Geekgirl- those entries don't seem to want to go away.  I did exactly what you dictated, but they are back.  Also, I have tried to go to the Windows Update site, but I am not able to download the updates (I get Error number: 0x80072EFD; I have tried some of the troubleshooting associated with this error, but to no avail!).  Not sure what I should do (use Mozilla?!?)  Any advice would be welcome.  Thanks for your help.

I apologize for the delay...

Ok lets give this a try

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Download AboutBuster and unzip it to a folder on your the Desktop. Do not run it yet!

Download DelDomains.inf

To use: Close all open browsers
Right-click DelDomains.inf and select: Install

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

That 023 (NSS) entry will not budge:-X!  I did everything you said to do, save a couple of things.  1) I did not fix the "Trusted Zones"- I put them there intentionally because I have IE set to prompt me when a site requests a cookie; these are sites I trust.  2) I could not locate crtv32.exe anywhere to delete it; I must have trashed it already?

Where do we go from here?  Also, any thoughts on how to fix the Windows Update problem?  Thanks for your help:).

-Mike

PS Running process wuauclt.exe- is it legit?

Ok then your log is clean other than the 023 entry but its stating the file is missing so lets try to get you conencted to windows update first.

First off, not to be rude but is your XP a legal copy? If it is not you will not be able to get updates.
Secondly, read through this link at some suggestions as to why you cannot d/l updates.

Now go here see if you can get IE6 SP1
