windows xp pro service pack 1
I recently reinstalled xp pro with service pack 1, and also installed norton anti-virus 2005. I've since tried to uninstall the norton because it was giving my problems, but I dont' think it uninstalled fully for some reason. I cannot access my system restore at all and doesnt seem to be on the registry. When i click on system restore a blank screen comes up. Also, I can log into yahoo messenger but when I click on a contact nothing happens, cannot receive messages either. Also, the logitech camera can't be installed the wizard gets interruped with an error saying the my system has not been modified. I hope you can help me and I appreciate your knowlege. Thanks, Jenny

Hello and Welcome to MyTechSupport.ca

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

You have an outdated version of HJT. Please Download the newer version HiJackThis 1.99.1. Delete the outdated one and use this newer one for your fix.

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall.  Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there.  Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. You will use this later.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - (no file)

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button.  When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.
Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot your System in normal mode.

Please post a fresh Hijack This log so that we can check if your system is clean.

Also Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

Hi! Housecall found this file and couldnt delete or clean it, error was that it was in use: c:\Documents and Settings\Danielle\Application data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.o\file\SecurityClassLoader.class-6fd9f626-41ec4f33.class'  found the file, believe its java but couldn't find a cache button to clear.
I couldn't do the sfc/scannow because it couldn't find it. The Clean Up was asking for windows service pack 1 cd, I have the windows xp pro Cd and updated to service pack later. So this didn't work and told me it was the wrong cd, I got several error messages with this and had to restart to get rid of them.
Yahoo messenger won't let me send or receive messages and I still cannot access my system restore. PLease HELP!! thankyou

Here is my new log:

Your log is clean.

You can try to delete that file in safe mode.
You also need to delete your temp files.

To locate the current \Temp folder and display its contents

Exit all programs,
Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.
Click anywhere in the Address bar to select it.
Type the following and then press Enter:

%temp%

The \Temp folder for the currently logged-on user is displayed.
Note the location of the \TEMP folder

Take note of the contents of the \TEMP folder. Do one of the following:

Delete any files and subfolders within this folder. In most cases, this is the recommended action. Files and folders that were placed there by Windows or Windows-based programs were not meant to be permanent and can be safely deleted.
You can also move the files to a different location if you are not sure that the files or folders were placed there by Windows or Windows-based programs.

It would probably be a good idea to set a "new" system restore point.

Follow these instructions:

Turn off System Restore by doing the following:

Click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK. Then you can go head and Enable again.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

When you use the system file checker did you make sure you left a space between the sfc and the /
You need to run that.

I know you said my system was clean, but i'm still having trouble with a bunch of things, cleaning the virus's didnt seem to help them.
1.)The window file protection thing didn't work, came up with an error saying files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache and then it asked for my windows xp pro service pack1 cd, i inserted my windows xp pro cd but it said this was the wrong CD, thats the only only I have. (I recently upgraded it to sp1)
2.)I can get to the system restore screen now, turned it off but when i turned it back on, i got an error saying encountered an error trying to enable/disable drives.. i also cannot see anywhere where there is a calendar or something showing a restore point was ever created.
3.)Yahoo messenger still is not working after deleting and re-adding. It sometimes logs in and immediately errors with need to close (ypager.exe) When i do get it to log in, I cannot click on a name and send anything, nothing happens, nor can i receive any messages. (msn messenger works fine)
4.)I also cannot access help and support in the start menu, and the search button in the start menu goes to a somewhat blank page.
5.)I could not figure out how to clear that securityclassloader.class error i mentioned in the previous post
Please help, I really appreciate it, Jenny

Hi, well it seems my problem is difficult to solve. But here's an update:
I can now use yahoo messenger because I downloaded trillium.
I also am using Mozilla instead IE because IE wasn't allowing access to certain sites
The problems I think has to do with my windows system
There is no system restore, no help, and no search
I got an error saying "corruupted windows management Instrumentation (WMI) when i was trying to reload service pack 1 because I thought maybe it didnt' load all the files correctly. I know you said my system was clean, but i'm still having trouble with a bunch of things, cleaning the virus's didnt seem to help them.

Please help, I really appreciate it, Jenny

To fix a corrupted WMI repository, you have to reinstall WMI.

Try this Link

I tried WMI link. I received an error when following the instructions
"failed to connect to (local computer) because Win32: The dependency service or group failed to start.
So I basically couldn't continue. Maybe this is now a post for the operation system and not security and viruses.. should I post to that category now?? waiting on your response,
Thankyou, Jenny

You can try a repair installation. While system is booted, pop in your xp cd and click install. It will reconize that you already have an O.S. installed and ask if you want to repair, just choose yes.
