RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: XP home
Problem Application Name & Version: explorer & OS
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

Hi... I was hoping that somebody could please give me a hand here.  I've been fending off several viruses and trojans lately and it doesn't look like I'm winning.

My symptoms.

1=At boottime just before the desktop comes up, when the screen is still black and there's the mswindows logo with a load bar below it, the bar pauses for a split second and there's a moment of low static... only about a half a second long.  This isn't an inconvenience but I never noticed it until recently and I think it's connected.

2=When I go online I get my proper homepage (a geocities page), and then I when I try to go somewhere else I lose my connection to the net.  It's not just explorer I think, I think that all programs get cut off.

3=Hijackthis will not open.  It merely blinks open then shuts again.

4=Occasionally explorer will not even open, however when I shut down I get the request to end the program Internet Explorer.  (If I tried to open the program unsuccessfully 10 times, I get the request to end the program 10 times)  When this happens, the Task Manager will also not open, but will also be requested to shut down when I reboot.

5=I get constant blocks from MSAnti-spyware informing me that such and such a change is being denied to my registry or that such and such a modification is being denied.  Likewise, about once a day or twice a day I get a trojan caught on my computer that is promptly deleted via Avast, but something unseen is obviously getting them on here since the ones I find out about are immediately deleted...

When I boot in safe mode, everything is cool (evidenced by this post and my log)...  please help me.  Undecided  Incidentally... since I can't run hijackthis in normal mode, the running processes you see on my log are safe mode processes...

My HJT log currently only finds 2 bad entries which keep reappearing.  Spybot comes up clean, Adaware comes up with only cookies, Avast Antivirus comes up clean, MSAnti-spy comes up clean and CWShredder comes up clean.

I have all the updates except for service pack 2...  why not SP2?  well... it's rather complicated but it has to do with living in Korea and not speaking Korea, let's simply call it a temporarily unsolvable complication.  For the moment, I've started using firefox which (from my uneducated perspective) should protect me in places where explorer is weak.  I'm at work now, so I'll follow your advice and repost my hjt log when I get home this evening.

Thanks a million pancake.

the two problem files are back (compaq32 service files) and the net still runs at a reduced pace.  However since switching to firefox the other day I no longer have the problem of losing my connection altogether.  At worst I lose my connection for a few minutes for isolated websites...

Do exactly as you did last time, using the same procedure as before but this time delete this file with the other...

C:\WINDOWS\System32\itwhurg.exe

If this fails we will have to dig further.

I think that did it pancake.  Thank you very much.  (I had noticed itwhurg there before, but something made me think it was microsoft anti-spy's update system).

I do believe my log has come out clean, but I'll post it anyway just to be sure.

Thanks again.

NOTE:  most programs still go stone cold unresponsive when I try to do something involving the desktop, like saving and opening files.  For example, my hijackthis log won't save at the moment.  But it should after rebooting so I'll edit it into this post.  this happens only (as far as I can remember) when my pc is on for a long stretch.

EDIT:  my (assumedly) clean hijackthis log

Your log is clean. No malware.I think that most of your problem still relates to not having SP2.You can order a free SP2 disc.
