PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: XP Home
Problem Application Name & Version: Windows Media Player

When I try to play MP3 files stored on my pc, windows media player opens up and it appears that the track is playing, however, no sound can be heard. If I listen to, for example, an internet radio station via media player the sound works OK. I've tried right clicking the speaker icon and anything looks OK with nothing muted. Any suggestions?

Sounds to me you have a problem playing MP3s. Might be a codec that you're missing, or a setting that's wrong, so let's start there. Open WMP, tools, options, file types, make sure that MP3 audio file is in the list and checked.

If it's a codec you're missing, pass by on http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx and click the first Download Now button you come across.

Thanks for the suggestions, the MP3 file is checked and unfortunately the download hasn't made any difference. I appreciate the help though.

Look through http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player/faq.aspx then. I know it says 9-series, but it's for the 10 series as well.
