Hello and Welcome to MyTechSupport.ca

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall.  Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there.  Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. You will use this later.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://channels.aimtoday.com/search/aimtoolbar.jsp
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://channels.aimtoday.com/search/aimtoolbar.jsp

O16 - DPF: {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-DEFA-EB76B1D5FA7D} - http://eztracks.aavalue.com/EZT/Toolbar/eztdl.cab

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\exp

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:

*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot your System in normal mode.

Please post a fresh Hijack This log so that we can check if your system is clean.

Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one (You must kill them one at a time).

If you are not running a web server on this computer, this can be fixed
C:\PROGRAM FILES\WEBSVR\SYSTEM\INETSW95.EXE 9

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RAAT.EXE

Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:

Microsoft WebServer

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O8 - Extra context menu item: &AIM Search - res://C:\PROGRAM FILES\AIM TOOLBAR\AIMBAR.DLL/aimsearch.htm
O9 - Extra button: Dell Home - {EE117DAA-A30B-40FC-945C-38AE1B80C1FA} - http://www.dellnet.com/ (file missing) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)
O16 - DPF: {6F750200-1362-4815-A476-88533DE61D0C} (Ofoto Upload Manager Class) - http://www.ofoto.com/downloads/BUM/BUM_WIN_IE_1/axofupld.cab
O16 - DPF: {F229AB32-7BF9-4225-B78F-B4680AE6FC23} (Snapfish File Upload ActiveX Control) - http://www.snapfish.com/SnapfishUpload.cab
If you are not running a web server on this computer, these two can be fixed as well.

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

C:\PROGRAM FILES\WEBSVR\
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RAAT.EXE

Forgive me, but I don't understand:
Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one (You must kill them one at a time). Do I kill the 8 running processes or just the two you list:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\WEBSVR\SYSTEM\INETSW95.EXE 9 ( I am runnning a web server so I did not touch this...it wasn't listed anyway.)
and
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RAAT.EXE (this also was not listed.)

I then scanned my system, however only 2 of the items came up that were on your list, which I fixed:
O16 - DPF: {6F750200-1362-4815-A476-88533DE61D0C} (Ofoto Upload Manager Class) - http://www.ofoto.com/downloads/BUM/BUM_WIN_IE_1/axofupld.cab
O16 - DPF: {F229AB32-7BF9-4225-B78F-B4680AE6FC23} (Snapfish File Upload ActiveX Control) - http://www.snapfish.com/SnapfishUpload.cab

Do I simply delete C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RAAT.EXE from the system...it was not in the Hijack this log.

I ran CleanUp!, however the Delete Prefetch files is not an option for me.

Here is my new log.

Again, items are here when I run it in Normal Mode that were not in it  when I ran it in safe mode. How can I get rid of these??

I believe someone in my household has downloaded yet some additional nasty files. Any advice you can give me on cleaning what is here now and what I can do to avoid future attacks would be greatly appreciated!

Yes someone has, your browser has been hijacked.
If you do not see them in Safe Mode try doing it in normal mode, but you may find you get errors when trying to delete because the file is in use. If you get an error you will then have to boot into Safe Mode to delete the file.

Try to keep others off this system untill we can get this cleaned up.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download WinsockFix and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one (You must kill them one at a time). Only kill the ones listed !!

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RAAT.EXE
C:\PROGRAM FILES\WEB_REBATES\WEBREBATES0.EXE
C:\PROGRAM FILES\WEB_REBATES\WEBREBATES1.EXE

Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:

WEB_REBATES
MyWay Search Assistant
WEBHANCER

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

Your log is clean. Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

It would probably be a good idea to set a "new" system restore point.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Thank you greatly for taking the time to help me with my problem. My system does not appear to have any problems at the moment, but then again others in the house are not using it. I will be sure to read and use the tools provided at the Anti-Spyware Tutorial you suggested before letting them back on.

Can you explain what you mean by setting a "new" system restore point?

Again, thank you.

Windows ME has a feature to let you go back to a "point" where things maybe werent so bad. Most users do not even know of this feature but it sometimes comes in handy if you cannot get things worked out. to my knowledge, and from others words, Windows ME system restore works about half the time. Not many successes in using it.
If you feel you want to set a new restore point so you can come back to a certain date you can follow these instructions.

Turn off System Restore by doing the following:

Click Start>Settings and then click Control Panel.Double-click the System icon. The System Properties dialog box appears.Click the Performance tab, and then click File System.Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore.Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.

To enable Windows Me System Restore:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click System, and then click the Performance tab.
3. Click File System, and then click the Troubleshooting tab.
4. Uncheck Disable System Restore.
5. Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.
