PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows 98
Problem Application Name & Version: Popups when PC starts
Problem Hardware Make & Model:  EMachine
Error Messages:
Computer had over 480 critical objects detected by Ad-aware.  Spybot S&D located I believe over 280 objects.  I have reduced the number to 17 detected by Ad-aware and 1 detected by Spybot S&D.  I applied Host file to machine along with IE-Spyad.  Here is a copy of HiJackThis; I need for someone to review the log file and recommend the steps to remove the remaining software.  The PC is running better so I know I am going in the right direction

Hello and Welcome to MyTechSupport.ca

It seems that you don't use an anti-virus scanner or your scanner is not active. Only an anti-virus scanner can protect you against new viruses. I strongly suggest you install an anti-virus. AVG Free Edition is a good program to use.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
 To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall.  Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there.  Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. You will use this later.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one (You must kill them one at a time).

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PSOF1.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ELITEUJV32.EXE
C:\PROGRAM FILES\CAS\CLIENT\CASCLIENT.EXE

Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:

CAS
SURFSIDEKICK 3
NaviSearch

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

C:\PROGRAM FILES\CAS\
C:\PROGRAM FILES\SURFSIDEKICK 3\
C:\WINDOWS\CFGMGR52.DLL
C:\Program Files\NaviSearch\
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\temp532.exe -N

Locate and delete this file:
JGAV16AA.EXE
INTVPEAA.EXE

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:

*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot your System in normal mode.

Please post a fresh Hijack This log so that we can check if your system is clean.

Geekgirl

I reviewed your posting and performed the following:

Installed AVG and found 11 viruses.  The program deleted the following viruses from the PC:
protector.exe -> Trojan Horse Startpage.21.AG
ssk3_B5 Seedcorn4.exe -> Trojan Horse Downloader.Small.15.BS
cxtpls_loader.exe -> Trojan Horse Downloader.Generic.ANV
temperror32.dat -> Trojan Horse Startpage.21.AL
supdate.dll -> Trojan Horse Downloader.Generic.ALO
redit.cpl -> Trojan Horse Downloader.Generic.ANE
dist001.exe -> Trojan Horse Downloader.Agent.LW
uci.exe -> Trojan Horse Dropper.Agent.5.BL
pop.exe -> Trojan Horse Downloader.Small.15.BS
exp -> Trojan Horse Downloader.Small.15.BS
casstub.exe -> Trojan Horse Downloader.Agent.LW

Ran Ad-Aware with the VX2 variant tool.  Ad-Aware fround 17 critical objects.  The VX2 variant tool reported 'the system is clean'.

Ran Spybot S&D and found 3 problems.  Installed Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and one problem found.  Spybot reported all problems were fixed.

I did not scan the machine with the online scanners; I ran into problems with the dial-up connection

Enabled viewing of all files

Restarted computer in safe mode and could not find the following files in HiJackThis Open process manager

c:\windows\system\psof1.exe
c:\windows\system\eliteujv32.exe
c:\program files\cas\casclient.exe

From Control Panel, removed 'surfsidekick3'; 'cas' and 'navisearch' were not listed

From HiJack This, I found the majority of the entries you listed, HiJackThis reported all files selected were fixed.

I was able to delete the majority of the files you listed in RED and Blue.  The files I could not find were:

c:\windows\cfgmgr52.dll
c:\program files\navisearch
c:\windows\system\temp523.exe -n

I could not located 'jgav16aa.exe' or 'intvpeall.exe'

I installed and ran Cleanup! 4.0 with no problems.

I booted machine to normal mode and reran Ad Aware and Spybot.  Both programs did not detect any critical objects or problems.

Here is the latest HiJackThis Log
