Hello,
I have gone through the sticky notes in the forum.  I have run my up to date virus scanner and AdAware in safe mode with no issues found (I have them scan regularly and haven't had issues in years).  I also ran  Spybot S & D.

I booted up my computer the other day and the desktop with icons came up but there was limited functionality.  Both of my networking devices aren't recognized now (one wireless, one wired), I don't have the ability to copy or paste any files to any location, and the main issue being that I can't see my start menu or taskbar.

I have read around and found some things to try with no luck.  From a recommendation, I went to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and downloaded 117 which did no solve the issue.  I also downloaded SilentRunners.vbs from a recommendation from this site and attempted to run it with no luck.  I also tried another vbs file which didn't even appear to run, so I'm guessing my system is prohibiting that (I attempted to run the exact same files on a different computer and it worked fine).

I attempted to disable system restore on my machine and received the following error "System Restore encountered an nerror trying to enable/disable one or more drives.  Please restart your machine and try again."  I restarted in safe mode and received the same error.  I only have my C drive, so I'm not sure what it could be.

In safe mode, after all of the recommendations from the sticky, here is my HJT log file.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Operating System Version:  XP SP2
Problem Application Name & Version:  XP
Problem Hardware Make & Model:  Micron PC

Hello and Welcome to MyTechSupport.ca
I see nothing malicious in your log but you do need to fix some things. Please follow these instructions.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall.  Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there.  Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. You will use this later.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

O4 - Global Startup: Smart Wizard Wireless Settings.lnk = ?
O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)

O23 - Service: avast! Mail Scanner - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe" /service (file missing)
O23 - Service: avast! Web Scanner - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe" /service (file missing)
O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) - Unknown owner - %ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe" -d -f "%ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.ini (file missing)
O23 - Service: VNC Server (winvnc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\TightVNC\WinVNC.exe" -service (file missing)

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:

*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot your System in normal mode.

Next Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow   ( sfc if not reconized)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. You will need your Windows cd.

Please post a fresh Hijack This log so that we can check if your system is clean.

Thanks for the reply.  I followed your directions step by step.  I wasn't able to run the online scans since I don't have network access.

All of my symptoms are still there after all of the steps listed above.  Here is my new HJT log.  I know it was mentioned to removed the last one O23 - Service: VNC Server (winvnc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\TightVNC\WinVNC.exe" -service (file missing) but a few attempts and reboots didn't remove it.  I'm not too worried about it thought since I had VNC installed at one time.  Thanks again for any help!

If your issue still exists you may have to resort to a repair installation
