Hello and Welcome to MyTechSupport.ca

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

You have placed HJT in a Temporary location. Please move to a proper location before doing the fix.
(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders or Desktop. A good place to make a folder would be in My Documents, as this is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall.  Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there.  Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. You will use this later.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/su/sbcydsl/*http://www.yahoo.com

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\CFGMGR52.DLL

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:

*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot your System in normal mode.

Please post a fresh Hijack This log so that we can check if your system is clean.

I have printed out your instructions and am anxious to try the fix, but I cannot move HJT out of my Temp folder to any other location, because it just ignores my attempts to do so.  I suspect this might be because I am using it as Shareware and have not yet purchased the program.  Is it safe for me to go ahead and try your suggested fix?

HJT is not shareware nor is it a program you pay for, it is FREE

When you download it, point the location to your Documents. If you leave it in a temporary location, when you delete your temp files it gets deleted also along with the Backups it creates if you need to restore something that got deleted unintentionally.
I do not suggest attempting the fix without placing it in a permenant location. I cannot however stop you.
It is your choice, I can only make you aware of the issues that can arise.

I have worked through all of the fixes and am back to post my final Hijack This log so you can check if my system is clean.  Before posting the log, I have three things to note: 1) Five of the Hijack This entries that you instructed me to deleted were no longer showing up, and I therefore could not delete them.  2) In setting the Custom Options in Cleanup!, I could not put a check next to "Delete Prefetch files," because that item was showing up in light gray rather than black text and would not allow me to check it.  3) Even after doing all of the fixes and rebooting my System in normal mode, my Browser still attempts to open by itself; it goes to the sign-on page and sits there waiting for me to sign on.  That said, here is the fresh Hijack This log:

Hello again

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the HJT procedures below.

Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one (You must kill them one at a time).

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\EPUCMP.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\EPUCMP.EXE

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

If you do not know this entry '127.0.0.1', delete it
 R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1

Have HJT fix these
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: CControl Object - {3643ABC2-21BF-46B9-B230-F247DB0C6FD6} - C:\Program Files\E2G\IeBHOs.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [YBrowser] C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\browser\ybrwicon.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [EPUCMP] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\EPUCMP.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [EPUCMP] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\EPUCMP.exe
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\EPUCMP.EXE

Thank you again!  Please note that CleanUp! still will not allow me to place a check beside "Delete Prefetch files" if that matters.  My fresh Hijack This log follows:
