Hello everyone.  I have spent many, many hours searching for a solution to this problem I have.  I keep coming up empty.  In fact, I haven't even located a mention of something even close to what I am experiencing, which means it might not be a virus or spyware; I honestly don't know and would certainly appreciate your help.  FYI, I have Norton Antivirus, AdAware, HiJackThis, and shortly here I will download and run CC Cleaner as well.

PROBLEM:

The problem is in relation to Windows' Windows.  Each side of all windows on screen are wavy right in the center.  It looks very awkward.  Also, there is a problem with the task bar- certain parts of it to the right hand side of the screen have stretched to where you cannot access them (like the clock, etc.)  This applies as well to ordinary windows that you might open. When a window is opened, it is opened fully expanded and as such, certain accessibility features are stretched outside of the screen.  It happens to all windows, not just IE6, but also any system related windows, for example when you open up My Computer.  The edges are distorted and curve in the center of each side.  I went into my monitors settings to see if anything might have been accidentally tampered with but everything looks fine.  Weird things have been happening now and then too (which I haven't kept track of unfortunately).

Hello and Welcome to MyTechSupport.ca

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the HJT procedures below.

You have placed HJT on your Desktop. Please move to a proper location before doing the fix.
(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders or Desktop. A good place to make a folder would be in My Documents, as this is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
 To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall.  Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there.  Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. You will use this later.


Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).


Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:

MySearch


Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

 Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:

*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot your System in normal mode.

Please post a fresh Hijack This log so that we can check if your system is clean.

The only thing I see in your log and I didnt instruct you to remove it only because of your pc manufacturer.

This process
C:\Program Files\EarthLink TotalAccess\FastLane\IPClient.exe
Installed with Verizon DSL accounts. IP Insight is a Quality of Service monitor and diagnostic tool that isnt required. This one constantly "phones home" and wastes resource.
It is your choice tohave HJT fix it.

Other than that your log is clean.
As for your issue, have you checked your video card?

Hi and thanks Geek Girl for your help.  Unfortunately, the issue is still at hand.  All windows when opened stretch outside of the screen's viewing area, prohibiting accessibility of window controls.  (I can still control windows for the most part by right clicking on the window and can go to minimize or close; re-size is always greyed out for some reason).
 
In addition, it is weird but I am describing it the best way I can:  In the middle of all windows on the right and left hand side the edges are distorted and curvy. It seems to affect sites that have frames too (?).  I bring that up because I just noticed as I am writing this, the edge of the text box I am using is also curved in the middle.
 
The PC functions normally otherwise.  This PC is about 4 months old.  If not a virus or spyware, is there some kind of display control that might have been switched?  
You brought up the video card.  I would be happy to investigate that further.  Would you be able to give me instructions on how to do that?
 
Thank you so much for your help thus far.  The tools you directed me to will definately come in handy now, and in the future.  I anticipate your thoughts in regards to the issue.

Right click the desktop and click properties check the Settings tab, how many colors is listed under colors

Also Right click My Computer and click Properties. Click the Hardware tab and then Device Manager. Look for a yellow ? or ! take note of the deivce and post it here

OH MY GOD!

That was it.  That fixed it.  I feel really stupid that it was that simple.  Thank you Geek Girl for everything, especially your patience as I tried to explain what was happening.  

When I right-cliked on Desktop, Properties, Settings and then adjusted Screen Resolution from where it was - at the lowest setting- 800 x 600, and moved it up to 1024 x 768, then hit APPLY - the screen went black for about 5 -7 seconds....and then, everything was back to normal!!

I am so glad that you were able to troubleshoot my problem.
