My problem appears to be a downloader called Win32.SillyDI.TC (filename: dinst.exe located in C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Polley\Local Settings\Temp).  I have used Norton AintiVirus 2005 (definitions as of 08/09/05) Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta, Ad-Aware SE, Spyware Sweeper 3.5, Spyware Doctor 3.2, Spybot 1.4, Webroot SpyAudit, CleanUp 4.0 and RegSeeker. None of these were able to clean the infection.  Every time I visit a new web page I get a Program Control message warning me that kjhjxatdfci.exe is attempting to connect to a DNS server.  I select Always block connections from this program on all ports, but it keeps repeating the attempts with each new webpage visited.  There have been other .exe, but the aforemention comes up about 95% of the time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello and Welcome

Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of fixes as soon as they are posted.

Please save the following instructions in Notepad. I have customed my instructions on the assumption that you have Notepad 'on'. It may lead to some confusion should you choose to do otherwise.

If there's anything that you don't understand, kindly ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. There should not be any open browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON'T MISS A STEP & PERFORM EVERYTHING IN THE RIGHT ORDER.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Please download these additional files/programs.  Do not run them untill instructed to do so.
Unless otherwise stated, they should be stored in same directory as the HiJackThis program.

CleanUp! - Install.

KillBox v2.0.0.175

Nailfix - Unzip tp a new folder

FindIt's.zip

Process Explorer

DSRFix

Ewido Security Suite - Install &  Update it's database but do not run it yet.

UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER FOM THE INTERNET WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED DOWNLOADING

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Run a scan with HiJackThis & locate an entry that looks similar to this...
      c:\windows\system32\dmwrerr.exe   r
The name might be different but it resides in the system32 folder & has the lone alphabet "r" at the end. Take note of the filename & location.

Run Process Explorer and locate name of the file you've just identified in the list of Processes.
Select the process and click Process > Suspend
Leave Process Explorer running with the process suspended

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When doing the fix, you shall be viewing these instructions from Notepad.
Copy the filename/s listed below.
Select/Highlight all the filenames & then click on Notepad's Edit menu & select Copy
name of the file you've just identified
      c:\windows\system32\dmwrerr.exe
    C:\DOCUME~1\BRIANP~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WTU\aurareco.exe
    C:\DOCUME~1\BRIANP~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\dinst.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Launch KillBox.exe
Go to the File menu, and choose 'Paste from Clipboard' * this feature does not work on older versons of Killbox
Click the dropdown-arrow next to the "Full Path of File to Delete" field.
Verify that the filenames you pasted are found in there.
 Select/tick the following:
    Replace on Reboot
     Use Dummy
End Explorer Shell While Killing File
     Unregister dlll Before deleting
    * if it's not grayed out
Click the RED X button.
Click Yes at the 'Delete on Reboot' prompt.
Click Yes at the 'Pending Operations prompt'.

* If you received a message such as: "PendingFileRenameOperations registry data has been removed by external process", you have to restart Windows manually .
* If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

REBOOT TO SAFE MODE
Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
Continue to do so until the 'Windows Advanced Options' menu appears.
Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the menu item - Safe Mode

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Uninstall the following programs, if present, using Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs:
    ViewPoint

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Run Nailfix.exe. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Open the folder dsrfix
Double click on the dsrfix batch file( the one with the little gear in it )
Once dsrfix has completed it will close on its own

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Click Start->Run - type SERVICES.MSC & then click on the OK button
Locate the service - COM+ Component Service (COMCSVC)
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
Stop the service by using the Stop button.
Change the Startup type to Disabled & then click on the OK button

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

CLOSE ALL OTHER PROGRAMS & ALL OPEN WINDOWS

Run a scan with HiJackThis & select/tick the following & click "Fix checked" :

Thanks for your help.  I have followed your steps, though I could not locate C:\WINDOWS\kjhjxatdfci.exe.  So far I have not received any Program Control messages that this file, or any other, is trying to connect to a DNS server.  Also, the error message I was receiving after rebooting has stopped.

Here is the fresh HJT log:

Tell me.. How does it feel to be clean again? Tongue

Now that your system is clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  1. Clear & reset System Restore's cache

    1. click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
    2. Select the System Restore Tab
    3. Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
    4. Click Apply
    5. Then untick the same checkbox & click OK

  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure -  This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    5. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    6. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    7. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine.  This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish).  If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.  Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.  I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.  Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit windowsupdate.com regularly.  This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.  If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.  This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.  You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware,  & Hijackers from Your Computer

  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.  Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  11. Winpatrol -  Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.

A tutorial for this product is located here  Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

  12. IE/Spyad - IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system.  It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

  13. MVPS Hosts file - The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc.  Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer

  14. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program!  (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  15. Weather Watcher - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light.

  16. Firefox - Use this alternate browser. Whilst Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  17. Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  18. Google Toolbar - Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
