PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Win98 SE
Problem Application Name & Version: Win98 SE
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

Greetings wise ones,

Here's my little personnal nightmare, I hope someone can help me.

Bought myself a new machine (processor, motherboard, RAM and video card, power supply, casing), transfered what was still good on the old one (CD drives, reformated hard disks) and started installing Win98 SE with the intention of immediatly upgrade to WinXP Pro. Win98 installation goes just fine until the end, when it tries to detect and install non plug and play hardware. At that point, it crashes (progress at 6%).

So, I'm wondering wether there's a hardware problem with my new equipment (or with the way I pugged the old stuff in) or wether Win98 is somehow unable to handle my new machine.

Here are the stats of the PC:

Processor: AMD Athlon64 3000+ 1.80G/1600/512K/S939 90NM
Motherboard: AMD64 S939 ASUS A8N-E NF4 Ultra PCIE
Video card: ASUS PCIE GF6 EN6600GT 128M TVOSLI BTE 6600GT
RAM: 2x512MB Kingston KVR 400HZ DDR NO-ECC

Any suggestions? Questions?

Thanks,

A. Lucks

Win98 on a 64bit CPU, it should work as far as I know. But why don't you install Windows XP Pro immediately? Why first Win98, when it is obliterated anyway by XP?

It's because I just have the WinXP Pro upgrade. It seems I'll have to buy the full version.

You can install XP Pro without the need to buy a new version. Just follow this guide.
